The celebration of Earth Day began in 1963 when a former U.S. senator, Gaylord Nelson, began to worry about the condition of the planet and the creatures who inhabit it. It took Nelson 7 years to institute the holiday; and on April 22nd, 1970 the first Earth Day celebration was finally held. Spectacular sucess was underway, and now in 2010 over 20 million demonstrators and thousands of schools participate in the annual vow to protect the sustainability, cleanliness, and overall wellbeing of the planet we call Home.
